- Installing the Program
- The CD-ROM can be used with both Macintosh¿ and Windows¿ operating systems.
- You will find references to directories (Windows¿ users) and folders
- (Macintosh¿ users) throughout this document. The interface was designed for
- both teacher and student use, although some of the Teaching Resources files are
- password-protected for teacher use only.

- System Requirements
- Before installing the American History Interactive Maps CD-ROM , make sure your
- computer meets the requirements listed below.

- Minimum System Requirements:

- 68040 or PowerPC CPU
- 10 MB application RAM (5.3 MB for Adobe¿ Acrobat¿ Reader)
- 8 MB RAM / 4 MB RAM free for application
- Monitor displaying 256 colors at 640 x 480
- 2x CD-ROM drive or faster
- Apple System Software version 7.1 or later
- QuickTime(tm) 3.0 or higher later
- 16 MB available hard drive space
- Monitor resolution set to 256 colors or higher, and 640 x 480 or higher
- Dot-matrix or laser printer

- Installation Instructions
-
- Macintosh¿
-
- 1. If virtual memory is on, use the Memory control panel to turn it off.
- 2. If you are using RamDoubler and/or Optimem, turn these applications should
- be off.
- 3. Quit all open applications.
- 4. Insert the American History Interactive Maps CD╤ROM into your CD╤ROM drive.
- 5. When the CD icon appears on your desktop, double-click it and then
- double-click the Installer icon.
- 6. After you choose Install, a dialog box will prompt you to choose the hard
- drive where you would like to install the program. Click Switch Disk until the
- desired volume is shown, then click Install to continue.
- 7. A process dialog box will appear to indicate that the installation was
- successful. Click Quit or Restart to complete the installation. (If not
- successful, an alert dialog will notify you of a problem and give you the
- opportunity to Quit or Reinstall.)
- 8. Once installed, the HRW Interactive Maps folder will reside on your hard
- drive at the location you selected during installation.
- 9. Double-click the Start Interactive Maps icon in this folder to start the
- program. Make sure the CD-ROM is still in the drive. If it is not, you'll be
- prompted to insert it.

- Windows 95 and Windows 98
- Note: If your CD-ROM drive is designated something other than "D," substitute
- "D" with the letter of your drive when following the instructions below.

- 1. Quit all other programs first.
- 2. It is important that you disable any Virus Software you may be running.
- 3. Insert the American History Interactive Maps CD╤ROM into your CD╤ROM tray.
- 4. From Explorer, click the CD╤ROM drive.
- 5. Double-click install.exe on the CD╤ROM .
- 6. At the first screen, click Next to continue or Cancel if you do not wish to
- install at this time. If Cancel is selected, you will have the option to Resume
- or Exit the Setup.
- 7. If you choose Next, a dialogue box will appear allowing you to choose the
- hard disk where you would like to install the program. The default hard drive is
- the C: drive. Use the Browse button if another hard drive is desired.
- 8. A progress bar will appear as the files are installed.
- 9. Upon completion, you can choose to Restart and click Finish.
- 10. The installer will create an American History Interactive Maps shortcut on
- the desktop. (Be sure the CD╤ROM is still in the CD-ROM tray. If it is not, you
- will be prompted to insert it.)

- Launching the Program in Windows 95 and Windows 98
- To run the American History Interactive Maps CD╤ROM program in Windows 95 and
- Windows 98:

- 1. Click the Start menu button.
- 2. Click the Programs icon.
- 3. Double-click the American History Interactive Maps CD╤ROM icon.

- Teaching Resources
- Lesson Plans and Rubrics
-
- Each interactive map is accompanied by a lesson plan, which makes it easy for
- you to integrate multimedia into your classroom instruction. Each lesson plan
- provides step-by-step suggestions, from time requirements and lesson objectives
- to implementation and assessment. Hyperlinks within the lesson plan let you
- preview the Interactive Map used in a lesson. The lesson plans are stored as
- Adobe¿ Acrobat¿ files and can be printed, but not edited.

- The comprehensive collection of rubrics in American History Interactive Maps
- CD╤ROM help you easily assess these performance-based activities. All lessons
- are connected to their rubrics through hyperlinks.

- Accessing the Teaching Resources
- Macintosh(r)
- 1. Open the American History Interactive Maps CD╤ROM.
- 2. Double-click the Lessons.pdf file on the CD╤ROM. The Teaching Resources Main
- Menu appears on the screen.

- Windows¿ 95 and Windows¿ 98
- 1. Locate the Mainmenu file on the CD╤ROM.
- 2. Open or run Lessons, and the Teaching Resources Main Menu will appear on the
- screen.

- Using the Teaching Resources From a Hard Drive
- To copy the Teaching Resources documents to your hard drive, you need to have
- Adobe¿ Acrobat¿ Reader to read PDF files. If you do not already have Adobe¿
- Acrobat¿ Reader installed on your computer, you may install it from this
- CD╤ROM. Once you have installed Adobe¿ Acrobat¿ , you simply run the installer
- files for the Teaching Resources, place the files where you wish them to be on
- your computer, and double-click the Main Menu to locate and print the chosen
- resource.

- Installing the Acrobat Reader with Macintosh¿
- Insert the American History Interactive Maps CD╤ROM into the CD╤ROM drive. When
- the Interactive Map icon appears on the desktop, double-click the icon to open
- the CD╤ROM . The first step to using the Teaching Resources files installed on
- your computer is to install the Adobe¿ Acrobat¿ Reader on your computer.

- 1. Locate and open the Acrobat folder on the disc.
- 2. Double-click the Install Acrobat icon and follow the on-screen instructions
- for installing the Acrobat Reader.

- Installing the Acrobat Reader with Windows¿
- 1. Click the Start button and then click Run.
- 2. In the Open box, type d:\acroread and then click OK. (Substitute the letter
- for your CD╤ROM drive if it is not "D.")
- 3. Follow the on-screen instructions for installing the Acrobat Reader.**

- **Note: The installers may not run if you are running Windows 98 and and virus
- software. If you have problems running the installers, disable any virus
- protection software you may be running.

- Please read this license carefully before using this Product. By using this
- Product, you are agreeing to be bound by the terms of this agreement. If you do
- not agree to the terms of this agreement, promptly return the unused Product and
- any accompanying items in salable condition to Holt, Rinehart and Winston, Inc.
- for a refund. If you have any questions regarding the use of this Product, the
- terms of this agreement, or the return of the product, please contact the
- HRW Technical Support Center.

- 1. Grant of License. This Product is an educational product intended for
- instructional use in a classroom. Use of this Product outside of the
- classroom, except for those uses specified below, is prohibited.
- By purchasing this Product and agreeing to the terms of this license
- you have permission to use the text, audio, video, tools, and other
- instructional resources contained within the Product for use in instruction,
- customizing your instruction, creating teacher and student presentations,
- and for professional staff development. Permission to copy and distribute
- materials within the Product is granted when used for these purposes and
- in conjunction with the use of the Product for individual classroom instruction.

- You have permission to make one "back-up copy" of the software portion of
- the Product for archival purposes, or copy it onto the hard disk of your
- computer and retain the original for archival purposes. Licensed users
- may copy the software portion of the Product from the original or from one
- single computer to another single computer (portable or home computer),
- for instruction use, lesson planning and preparation, the development of
- teacher and student presentations, or in the development or presentation
- of staff development materials associated with the educational use of the

- 2. License Restrictions. HRW reserves the rights to all materials herein
- and restricts the use of those materials in whole or in part for broadcast,
- distribution, the creation of derivative works, and all other uses of the
- Product not specified in the "Grant of License" portion of this agreement.

- Under the terms of this agreement you may not translate the software
- portion of the Product, merge it with another program, or modify it,
- except as specifically described in the "Grant of License" portion of this
- agreement. No portion of the Product may be loaned, sub-licensed, leased,
- or rented. Reverse-engineering, disassembly, decompiling, or otherwise
- attempting to discover the source code of the software portion of the Product
- is strictly prohibited.

- 3. Copyright. This Product is copyrighted by HRW and is protected by United
- States and international copyright laws and international treaty provisions.
- Your use of this Product is subject to the terms of the "License Agreement."
- The right to use this Product terminates automatically if any portion of the
- "License Agreement" is not adhered to.

- 4. Replacements. Should any of the media components of the Product become
- inoperable as a result of physical damage, HRW will replace the media
- component at its current manufacturing costs plus the cost of shipping and
- handling within one year from the date of purchase. For replacement of a
- media component due to physical damage please call the HRW Technical Support
- Center to request a return authorization. The damaged item must be returned
- to the HRW Technical Support Center along with your written request for a
- replacement and a copy of your paid invoice. No replacements will be made
- for copies of the Product sold outside of the U.S., except for U.S.
- Department of Defense Schools.

- 5. LIMITED WARRANTY. HRW REPRESENTS THAT FOR A PERIOD OF 90 DAYS FROM YOUR
- RECEIPT OF A COPY OF THE PRODUCT THAT: 1) THE MEDIA ON WHICH THE PRODUCT
- IS DISTRIBUTED WILL BE FREE FROM DEFECTS IN MATERIALS AND WORKMANSHIP UNDER
- NORMAL USE; AND 2) THE PRODUCT WHEN USED IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE WRITTEN
- INSTRUCTIONS WILL SUBSTANTIALLY PERFORM THE FUNCTIONS SPECIFIED IN THE USER'S
- MANUAL. ANY WRITTEN OR ORAL INFORMATION GIVEN BY A HRW REPRESENTATIVE, DEALER,
- AGENT, OR EMPLOYEE WILL IN NO WAY INCREASE THE SCOPE OF THIS WARRANTY.

- IF THE PRODUCT DOES NOT MEET THE LIMITED WARRANTY, HRW'S ENTIRE LIABILITY
- AND YOUR EXCLUSIVE REMEDY WILL BE REPLACEMENT OF THE MEDIA OR A FULL REFUND
- OF THE PURCHASE PRICE. THIS LIMITED WARRANTY APPLIES ONLY IF THE PRODUCT
- OR MEDIA ITEM IN QUESTION IS RETURNED TO HRW ALONG WITH A COPY OF YOUR PAID
- INVOICE WITHIN 90 DAYS OF THE DATE YOU RECEIVED THE PRODUCT. ANY REPLACEMENT
- PRODUCT WILL BE WARRANTED FOR 90 DAYS FROM THE TIME IT IS RECEIVED. THIS
