  7. Installing the Program
  8. The CD-ROM can be used with both Macintosh¿  and Windows¿  operating systems.
  9. You will find references to directories (Windows¿ users) and folders
  10. (Macintosh¿  users) throughout this document. The interface was designed for
  11. both teacher and student use, although some of the Teaching Resources files are
  12. password-protected for teacher use only.
  13.  
  14. System Requirements
  15. Before installing the American History Interactive Maps CD-ROM , make sure your
  16. computer meets the requirements listed below.
  17.

  22. 10 MB application RAM (5.3 MB for Adobe¿  Acrobat¿  Reader)
  23. 8 MB RAM / 4 MB RAM free for application

  26. Apple System Software version 7.1 or later
  27. QuickTime(tm) 3.0 or higher later

  46. Installation Instructions
  47.  
  48. Macintosh¿ 
  49.  
  50. 1.  If virtual memory is on, use the Memory control panel to turn it off.
  51. 2.  If you are using RamDoubler and/or Optimem, turn these applications should
  52. be off.
  53. 3.  Quit all open applications.
  54. 4.  Insert the American History Interactive Maps CD╤ROM into your CD╤ROM drive.
  55. 5.  When the CD icon appears on your desktop, double-click it and then
  56. double-click the Installer icon.
  57. 6.  After you choose Install, a dialog box will prompt you to choose the hard
  58. drive where you would like to install the program. Click Switch Disk until the
  59. desired volume is shown, then click Install to continue.
  60. 7.  A process dialog box will appear to indicate that the installation was
  61. successful. Click Quit or Restart to complete the installation. (If not
  62. successful, an alert dialog will notify you of a problem and give you the
  63. opportunity to Quit or Reinstall.)
  64. 8.  Once installed, the HRW Interactive Maps folder will reside on your hard
  65. drive at the location you selected during installation. 
  66. 9.  Double-click the Start Interactive Maps icon in this folder to start the
  67. program. Make sure the CD-ROM is still in the drive. If it is not, you'll be
  68. prompted to insert it.

  71. Windows 95 and Windows 98
  72. Note:    If your CD-ROM drive is designated something other than "D," substitute
  73. "D" with the letter of your drive when following the instructions below.
  74.  
  75. 1.  Quit all other programs first.
  76. 2.  It is important that you disable any Virus Software you may be running. 
  77. 3.  Insert the American History Interactive Maps CD╤ROM into your CD╤ROM tray.
  78. 4.  From Explorer, click the CD╤ROM drive.
  79. 5.  Double-click install.exe on the CD╤ROM .
  80. 6.  At the first screen, click Next to continue or Cancel if you do not wish to
  81. install at this time. If Cancel is selected, you will have the option to Resume
  82. or Exit the Setup.
  83. 7.  If you choose Next, a dialogue box will appear allowing you to choose the
  84. hard disk where you would like to install the program. The default hard drive is
  85. the C: drive. Use the Browse button if another hard drive is desired.
  86. 8.  A progress bar will appear as the files are installed.
  87. 9.  Upon completion, you can choose to Restart and click Finish.
  88. 10.  The installer will create an American History Interactive Maps shortcut on
  89. the desktop. (Be sure the CD╤ROM is still in the CD-ROM tray. If it is not, you
  90. will be prompted to insert it.)

  92. Launching the Program in Windows 95 and Windows 98
  93. To run the American History Interactive Maps CD╤ROM program in Windows 95 and
  94. Windows 98:

  96. 1.  Click the Start menu button.
  97. 2.  Click the Programs icon.
  98. 3.  Double-click the American History Interactive Maps CD╤ROM icon.

  102. Teaching Resources
  103. Lesson Plans and Rubrics
  104.  
  105. Each interactive map is accompanied by a lesson plan, which makes it easy for
  106. you to integrate multimedia into your classroom instruction. Each lesson plan
  107. provides step-by-step suggestions, from time requirements and lesson objectives
  108. to implementation and assessment. Hyperlinks within the lesson plan let you
  109. preview the Interactive Map used in a lesson. The lesson plans are stored as
  110. Adobe¿  Acrobat¿  files and can be printed, but not edited.

  112. The comprehensive collection of rubrics in American History Interactive Maps
  113. CD╤ROM help you easily assess these performance-based activities. All lessons
  114. are connected to their rubrics through hyperlinks.

  116. Accessing the Teaching Resources
  117. Macintosh(r)
  118. 1.  Open the American History Interactive Maps CD╤ROM.
  119. 2.  Double-click the Lessons.pdf file on the CD╤ROM. The Teaching Resources Main
  120. Menu appears on the screen.

  122. Windows¿  95 and Windows¿  98
  123. 1.  Locate the Mainmenu file on the CD╤ROM. 
  124. 2.  Open or run Lessons, and the Teaching Resources Main Menu will appear on the
  125. screen.

  127. Using the Teaching Resources From a Hard Drive
  128. To copy the Teaching Resources documents to your hard drive, you need to have
  129. Adobe¿  Acrobat¿  Reader to read PDF files. If you do not already have Adobe¿ 
  130. Acrobat¿   Reader installed on your computer, you may install it from this
  131. CD╤ROM. Once you have installed Adobe¿  Acrobat¿  , you simply run the installer
  132. files for the Teaching Resources, place the files where you wish them to be on
  133. your computer, and double-click the Main Menu to locate and print the chosen
  134. resource.

  136. Installing the Acrobat Reader with Macintosh¿ 
  137. Insert the American History Interactive Maps CD╤ROM into the CD╤ROM drive. When
  138. the Interactive Map icon appears on the desktop, double-click the icon to open
  139. the CD╤ROM . The first step to using the Teaching Resources files installed on
  140. your computer is to install the Adobe¿  Acrobat¿   Reader on your computer.
  141.  
  142. 1.  Locate and open the Acrobat folder on the disc. 
  143. 2.  Double-click the Install Acrobat icon and follow the on-screen instructions
  144. for installing the Acrobat Reader.
  145.  
  146. Installing the Acrobat Reader with Windows¿ 
  147. 1.  Click the Start button and then click Run.
  148. 2.  In the Open box, type d:\acroread and then click OK. (Substitute the letter
  149. for your CD╤ROM drive if it is not "D.")
  150. 3.  Follow the on-screen instructions for installing the Acrobat Reader.**

  152. **Note: The installers may not run if you are running Windows 98 and and virus
  153. software.  If you have problems running the installers, disable any virus
  154. protection software you may be running.

  221. Product, you are agreeing to be bound by the terms of this agreement.  If you do 
  222. not agree to the terms of this agreement, promptly return the unused Product and 
  223. any accompanying items in salable condition to Holt, Rinehart and Winston, Inc. 
  224. for a refund.  If you have any questions regarding the use of this Product, the 
  225. terms of this agreement, or the return of the product, please contact the

  228.    1.   Grant of License.  This Product is an educational product intended for 
  229.         instructional use in a classroom.  Use of this Product outside of the 
  230.         classroom, except for those uses specified below, is prohibited.
  231.         By purchasing this Product and agreeing to the terms of this license 
  232.         you have permission to use the text, audio, video, tools, and other 
  233.         instructional resources contained within the Product for use in instruction, 
  234.         customizing your instruction, creating teacher and student presentations, 
  235.         and for professional staff development.  Permission to copy and distribute 
  236.         materials within the Product is granted when used for these purposes and 
  237.         in conjunction with the use of the Product for individual classroom instruction.

  239.         You have permission to make one "back-up copy" of the software portion of 
  240.         the Product for archival purposes, or copy it onto the hard disk of your 
  241.         computer and retain the original for archival purposes.  Licensed users 
  242.         may copy the software portion of the Product from the original or from one 
  243.         single computer to another single computer (portable or home computer), 
  244.         for instruction use, lesson planning and preparation, the development of 
  245.         teacher and student presentations, or in the development or presentation 
  246.         of staff development materials associated with the educational use of the

  249.    2.   License Restrictions.  HRW reserves the rights to all materials herein 
  250.         and restricts the use of those materials in whole or in part for broadcast, 
  251.         distribution, the creation of derivative works, and all other uses of the 
  252.         Product not specified in the "Grant of License" portion of this agreement.

  254.         Under the terms of this agreement you may not translate the software 
  255.         portion of the Product, merge it with another program, or modify it, 
  256.         except as specifically described in the "Grant of License" portion of this 
  257.         agreement.  No portion of the Product may be loaned, sub-licensed, leased, 
  258.         or rented.  Reverse-engineering, disassembly, decompiling, or otherwise 
  259.         attempting to discover the source code of the software portion of the Product 
  260.         is strictly prohibited.
  261.         
  262.    3.   Copyright.  This Product is copyrighted by HRW and is protected by United 
  263.         States and international copyright laws and international treaty provisions.  
  264.         Your use of this Product is subject to the terms of the "License Agreement." 
  265.         The right to use this Product terminates automatically if any portion of the 
  266.         "License Agreement" is not adhered to.
  267.  
  268.    4.   Replacements.  Should any of the media components of the Product become 
  269.         inoperable as a result of physical damage, HRW will replace the media 
  270.         component at its current manufacturing costs plus the cost of shipping and 
  271.         handling within one year from the date of purchase.  For replacement of a 
  272.         media component due to physical damage please call the HRW Technical Support 
  273.         Center to request a return authorization.  The damaged item must be returned 
  274.         to the HRW Technical Support Center along with your written request for a 
  275.         replacement and a copy of your paid invoice.  No replacements will be made 
  276.         for copies of the Product sold outside of the U.S., except for U.S. 
  277.         Department of Defense Schools.

  279.    5.   LIMITED WARRANTY.  HRW REPRESENTS THAT FOR A PERIOD OF 90 DAYS FROM YOUR 
  280.         RECEIPT OF A COPY OF THE PRODUCT THAT:  1) THE MEDIA ON WHICH THE PRODUCT 
  281.         IS DISTRIBUTED WILL BE FREE FROM DEFECTS IN MATERIALS AND WORKMANSHIP UNDER 
  282.         NORMAL USE; AND 2) THE PRODUCT WHEN USED IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE WRITTEN 
  283.         INSTRUCTIONS WILL SUBSTANTIALLY PERFORM THE FUNCTIONS SPECIFIED IN THE USER'S 
  284.         MANUAL.  ANY WRITTEN OR ORAL INFORMATION GIVEN BY A HRW REPRESENTATIVE, DEALER, 
  285.         AGENT, OR EMPLOYEE WILL IN NO WAY INCREASE THE SCOPE OF THIS WARRANTY.

  287.         IF THE PRODUCT DOES NOT MEET THE LIMITED WARRANTY, HRW'S ENTIRE LIABILITY 
  288.         AND YOUR EXCLUSIVE REMEDY WILL BE REPLACEMENT OF THE MEDIA OR A FULL REFUND 
  289.         OF THE PURCHASE PRICE.  THIS LIMITED WARRANTY APPLIES ONLY IF THE PRODUCT 
  290.         OR MEDIA ITEM IN QUESTION IS RETURNED TO HRW ALONG WITH A COPY OF YOUR PAID
